Cattle Report 16th April, 2018

10 Prime cattle, 11 Breeding cows with calves at foot and 3 OTM cattle were sold on Monday, prior to our annual sale of Grass Lets.

Prime cattle sold to a top of 226p/kg for a 580kg Limousin heifer, from Omand, Stembister, Toab, which realised £1310.80 to Flett Butcher, Stromness.

Other leading Prime heifer prices –

Limousin (560kg) Laga Farms Ltd, Arwick, Evie (226p) £1265.60
Angus (620kg) Moar, Withaquoy, Holm (224p) £1388.80
Charolais (685kg) Smith, Cauldhame, Stromness (214p) £1465.90

Prime steers also sold to 226p/kg for a 655kg Limousin, from Omand, Stembister, Toab, which realised £1480.30 to Craigie Buther Ltd, The Brig, Kirkwall.

A dispersal of the breeding herd from Messrs Parker, Salties, Sanday, saw cows with calves at foot sell to a top of £1200 for an ’05 born Limousin x cow with a Limousin x heifer calf at foot.

OTM Cows sold to 141.2p per kilo for an 850kg Simmental cow, from Omand, Stembister, Toab which realised £1200.

Grass let averages were well back on last year, with Region 1 land, eligible for BPS claims, averaging £96.54 per acre, £34.60 less than the 2017 average.

Region 2 land was the same as last year, averaging approximately £40 per acre.
