Report – Orkney Bull Breeders Association Show & Sale 2016

The 2016 Show and Sale was held on Friday 22nd January, and, with the auditorium full to capacity,
judge, Stewart Leslie, Quoymorhouse, Shapinsay, presented trophies to the exhibitors of each
breed Champion.

The first breed catalogued were the Shorthorns, and the Champion was Lagas Hercules, a
February 2014 born bull, out of dam, Lagas Foxglove Flake, sired by Rowanberry Donatello.
This bull failled to reach reserve price and was unsold at the sale.

Reserve Champion Shorthorn was a homebred bull, shown by B & S Slater, Newbigging, Dounby.
This January 2014 born bull, Queenamoan Legolas, was sired by Tofts Jovial, out of dam,
Queenamoan Lanae. This bull sold for 2000gns to G & M Anderton, Harrabrough, South Ronaldsay.

There was one British Blue bull entered for sale. Graemeshall Idol, born November 2013
was bred and shown by A & A Foubister, Netherton, Holm. This bull created a lot of interest when
under the hammer and was finally knocked down at 4500gns to A & D Clark, Stratheast, Holm.

The Champion Limousin was bred and shown by R & J Johnston, Hewan, Shapinsay.
Hewan Jura, born April 2014, was out of dam Hewan Egilsay and was sired by Ashmara Commander.
This bull went to W I & D A Shearer, Airy, Stronsay for 3300gns.

Reserve Limousin was Lagas Jake. A February 2014 bull shown by Laga Farms, Evie out of dam
Balnacraig Ulay, sired by Maraiscote Gizmo. This was the highest priced bull selling for 5000gns
to J I & W N Stout, Whitehall, Stronsay.

Champion Aberdeen Angus was Skaill Danny. An April 2014 bull shown by Messers Davidson,
Skaill, Sandwick out of dam Skaill Diana sired by Logie Politician.
This bull sold for 3500gns to D & A Sutherland, Aithsdale, Longhope

Reserve Champion Angus was Burnside Email shown by P M Harcus, Messigate, Tankerness.
A March 2014 bull sired by Netherton Mr Brazilian and dam Burnside Evon.
This bull was unsold at the sale.

Other Aberdeen Angus bull – Messigate, Tankerness 3000gns.

Last to be judged were the Charolais with eight bulls forward. and the Champion rosette was
presented to Bailleston Jock. A May 2014 bull out of the dam Baillieston Gazelle sired by
Blelack Digger. This bull, which was bred by W R Baillie, Biggings, Toab generated some
brisk bidding before being knocked down at 4800gns to I & K Tait, Ingsay, Swannay.

Reserve Champion Charolais was a homebred bull, also shown by the Baillie family from Biggings, Toab.
This May 2014 born bull, Baillieston Jim, was sired by Blelack Digger, out of dam, Baillieston Gail.
This bull created a lot of interest when under the hammer, and was finally knocked down at
4000gns to Housebay Farms, Stronsay.

A good selection of Aged Bulls generated some interest from the audience.

Grutha, South Ronaldsay – Charolais 2150gns
