There was an OLA sale of breeding cattle on Thursday 09 October 2014.
First through the ring was the second and final part of the dispersal of 25 breeding cows of various ages from Messrs S B & C A Harvey of Raveyhall in Birsay. The cows were mostly big Aberdeen Angus crosses in calf to the Aberdeen Angus bull due from November to January. They sold up to £1,780 for a 4 year old cow and averaged £1,334.80 per head.
Eight heifers in calf to the Aberdeen Angus bull from Messrs Rosie, Quoybond, South Ronaldsay were next to be sold. Their preview photos on the OLA Facebook page had attracted a lot of attention prior to the sale. Top price was £3,000 for a Limousin cross British Blue and they averaged £2,421.25 per head.
Four British Blue cross dairy heifers in calf to an Aberdeen Angus bull from S Laird & Co, Pole, Burray sold up to £2,050 and averaged £1,650 per head.
Five cows from Messrs G R T Scarth & Co, Twatt Farm, Birsay that are all in calf to a Shorthorn bull sold up to £1,200 for a 4 year old Beef Shorthorn cross that is due next May.
Three pure Limousin heifers in calf to the Limousin bull from A & L Cromarty, Hools, South Ronaldsay sold up to £1,850.
Two Limousin cross heifers in calf to the Aberdeen Angus bull from M W Lennie, Seaview, Sanday sold for £1,400 and £1,250.
Three heifers with Limousin calves at foot from J Rendall, Rowland, Holm sold up to £2,900 for a Limousin cross.
An eight year old Aberdeen Angus bull from the Northfield Farms in Burray sold for £1,390 and a 8 year old Limousin bull from Messrs A A Whyte, Honeysgoe, South Ronaldsay sold for £1,350.
Two British Blue cross cows with Limousin calves at foot from Messrs D & U Hurst, Strathore, Shapinsay sold up to £1,850 for a 7 year old cow with heifer calf at foot.
