Ola Fostered Calf Sale

OLA SHOW & SALE OF SUCKLED CALVES 2011

Orkney Livestock Association’s annual show and sale of BVD status suckled calves was held at Orkney Auction Mart on Wednesday 26 October 2011. The show was judged by Stewart Leslie of Quoymorhouse in Shapinsay and was kindly sponsored by Natural Stockcare Ltd, the Limousin Society, the Simmental Society, the British Blue Society, Biobest Laboratories Ltd and Orkney Auction Mart Ltd.

Champion calf was a black Limousin cross heifer from Gary and Clare Flett of Leary in Birsay. She was sired by their own homebred Limousin bull “Leary Donald” who was by “Ronick Hawk” out of a British Blue cross cow. This is their first time they have won this show but have been reserve previously. She scaled 330kgs and sold for top gross price of £1,010 to Balfour Baillie, Sebay Cottage, Tankerness.

Reserve Champion for the second year running went to a British Blue cross heifer from Rod and Sian Jones of Denwick in Deerness with a full sister to last year’s reserve. She was sired by “Springfield Wisdom” out of their pedigree shorthorn cow “Featherstone Yvette”. She scaled 280kgs and sold for £800 to a buyer in Forfar.

OLA Secretary Karen Tait commented on the day that the standard of calves forward for show was very high. “The show was very well supported and there were a lot of spectators at the ring side. It created a good atmosphere and everyone appeared to enjoy their day. The vendors put in a lot of effort for this sale not only in getting the calves ready but also because the calves are BVD screened prior the event to give buyers more confidence in their purchase and enhancing trade. Calf sale numbers have declined over the years with more farmers preferring to retain them over winter, but we sold a total of 171 today which is a slight increase from last year”.
