Orkney Bull Breeders Association

Orkney Bull Breeders Association Show & Sale

The 2012 Show and Sale was held on Thursday, 26th January, and, although the auditorium was full to capacity when the sale commenced, bidders were few, and trade somewhat disappointing.

Mr B E Scott, Nistigar, Westray was judge on the day, and the first breed catalogued were the Aberdeen Angus’s. Although 2 bulls were entered, only one was forward.

Newlot Edition, owned and bred by Mr J W Hepburn, Burnside, Tankerness, was born in May 2010, out of Newlot Esmerelda, by Oakchurch Dictator. Edition failed to meet the vendor`s reserve in the ring, but was sold later.

An impressive show of Charolais bulls were next to be judged. Both the Champion and Reserve were out of a string of 6 strong bulls, bred and shown by the Baillie family, Biggings, Toab.

Champion was Baillieston Farr, a May 2010 born bull, out of dam, Baillieston Umbretta, sired by Dingle Hofmeister.

Reserve was Ballieston Frankie, also born in May, 2010. This bull was sired by Dingle Hofmeister, out of dam Baillieston Tania.

Both bulls left the ring unsold.

The Limousin’s were the last breed to be judged, there being no Simmental’s entered this year, and again there was a good strong show of bulls forward.

The Cursiter family from Laga, Evie, had 3 bulls entered, and, after deliberation, the judge gave the Champion rosette to Lagas Fandango. Born in May, 2010, out of Cornsay Barbara and sired by Penyfan Claret, this bull generated some brisk bidding, and was knocked down to Messrs T & G Ritch, Langskaill, Birsay, for 4000gns. This was the top priced bull on the day, the Limousin breed generating most interest from the audience.

Reserve Limousin was a slightly older bull, born in December, 2009, which was bred and shown by Messrs R & J Johnston, Hewan, Shapinsay, This bull was sired by Ashmara Commader, out of dam, Hewan Bunty, and was purchased by Messrs Eunson, Steaquoy, Shapinsay, for 2800gns.

Of the aged bulls entered, 3 were sold, top price being paid for an Aberdeen Angus, 6 year old Schivas Eric, from Messrs Seator, Seattersquoy, Stenness, which realised 2500gns.
